cherry Sarah Brandt: Midwifery and Murder

Murder on Astor Place
Current series
Author: Victoria Thompson
Publisher: Berkley Prime Crime
Dates: 1999-

"[I]t's traditionally women's work. Way back, ... midwives delivered all babies."
--From Cherry Ames,
Senior Nurse
, p. 61

Birth and death--Sarah Brandt, young widow of a murdered doctor, finds herself involved with both as a midwife and sometime sleuth in early twentieth-century New York City.

She turned her back on New York's elite to marry a crusading doctor, and now that he's been murdered, Sarah Brandt has continued to live among the downtrodden who need her services as nurse and midwife in lower Manhattan.

But her two worlds sometimes intersect, especially when murder is involved. And her entree into the world of high society often proves useful to New York City police sergeant Frank Malloy. This "Gaslight Mystery" series is marked by interesting period detail; a slow-moving, building relationship between Sarah and Frank (a widower with a disabled son); and a continuing mystery surrounding the murder of Sarah's husband.
