Cynthia Doyle is a beautiful, spunky, red-haired, blue-eyed nurse in love--with her chosen profession and with a particular young M.D. Cynthia is determined to do everything she can for her patients at bustling Metropolitan Hospital. But she's also set her nurse's cap for Dr. Edward Benson--and she wouldn't exactly put up a fuss if the handsome but rather clueless young doctor would notice once in a while that she's a woman as well as a nurse.
Cynthia frequently goes beyond the call of duty, both in work and in love. In just the first issue, she selflessly decides to marry a patient to convince him to have an operation that will save his life (he won't let her make the sacrifice). And then she agrees to be the maid of honor when Dr. Benson becomes engaged to her roommate, Terry, because, as she tearfully proclaims, "love is wanting the one you love to be happy" (Terry conveniently dies from cancer before the wedding, leaving the field clear for Cynthia).
Charlton introduced this comic book about an intrepid woman in white in October 1962, when it retitled Sweetheart Diary as Cynthia Doyle, Nurse in Love; Charlton frequently renamed its comics.
Like many of the other nurse romance comics of the time, each issue of Cynthia Doyle included a non-Cynthia romantic tale with a tearful heroine who learns to find happiness by changing her behavior or her outlook, often to fit the preferences of some man.
Cynthia Doyle made a joint appearance with Betsy Crane in the one-issue comic from Charlton entitled Registered Nurse (Summer 1963), which included stories reprinted from both series.
