Highlights
- After studying nursing in London, at age thirty-five, Edith Cavell worked at several hospitals in England.
- She traveled to Brussels to organize and direct a nursing school in 1907.
- After Belgium fell to the Germans in 1914, she sheltered and aided the escape of about two hundred Belgian, English, and French soldiers from Belgium to Holland and England.
- She was arrested on August 5, 1915 and imprisoned by the Germans.
- Despite appeals from American and Spanish ministers to Germany, Edith Cavell was executed by firing squad on October 12, 1915, sparking an international outcry.
