"Wouldn’t want a reporter job, would you?" he asked.

"Thank you, no," Cherry said with a smile.
--From Cherry Ames,
Clinic Nurse
, p. 24

When she wasn't snooping for a great metropolitan newspaper, Lois Lane occasionally worked as a nurse at Metropolis Hospital.

The Daily Planet's most celebrated sob sister, Lois Lane, didn't really spend every moment of her time pursuing the marriage-shy Superman.

She took a breather from both her news reporting and her (Super)man chasing to serve as an occasional part-time volunteer nurse at Metropolis Hospital, beginning in issue number 43 (August 1963)--and, remarkably, the gig wasn't even a ploy to snare the Man of Steel!

In the beginning, Lois identifies herself as a nurse's aide, and she's shown reading to patients, serving meals to them, helping to cheer up hospitalized kids by bringing them an autographed Superman poster, and basking in the amorous attentions of a handsome young patient.

But just a few issues later, when Lois returns to Metropolis Hospital for another volunteer stint, she's depicted as dispensing medicines to patients and even assisting at a surgical operation--apparently now a full-fledged angel of mercy.

Lois returns periodically to nursing duties in several issues. When she finally decides to stop wasting her time, to dump Superman, and to start a new life (January 1968), she changes her name to Lois Lorne, moves from Metropolis to Coral City, and promptly gets a hospital job as a nurse.
